Arabesque investigates the creative output of the Arab World and Iran. This book features examples of recwent innovative and groudbreaking design work that is inspired by the region's rich visual culture.

Given the important role of calligraphy in the Middle East, Arabesque focuses on typography. The book presents a wide range of fonts and typefaces drawn from tradional calligraphy, accompanied by a rich selection of applications. Further examples of graffiti and design further demonstrate how text can be used as illustration, an idea of particular interest to all poster designers and street artists.

Arabesque also features graphic design, logos and illustration by young designers and activists from Egypt, Iran, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emarites, which is also complimented by work from western designers influenced by Arab culture. Supplemental texts describe the environments in which these designers and artists work.

Arabesque also includes a CD-Rom featuring a typeface created by the book's editors, Ben Wittner and Sascha Thoma.
