Spun Chair
A completely rotational symmetrical form, Spun grew out of Heatherwick Studio's research into simplifying the geometry of an object as familiar as a chair.
Using full-size test pieces, a seating ergonomic was developed where the seat, back and arms all share the same profile. The result is not immediately recognisable as a chair, when upright it looks more like a sculptural vessel. On its side, however, it forms a comfortable and functional chair, in which the sitter can rock from side to side or even spin round in a complete circle.
Spun is made using rotational plastic moulding, an efficient and low cost manufacturing process which involves heating plastic pellets in a spinning four part mould to form a uniform thickness wall. The process also enables a rippled surface texture to be imparted into the piece, accentuating its form.
