Philosopher and writer Alain de Botton and graphic designer Anthony Burrill collaborated on a double-sided poster produced exclusively for the first GraphicDesign& event, held at the Design Museum. The event's subject was Generalia, Phenomena, Knowledge. Alain sees classification as an opportunity to reorganise knowledge so that it might be more helpful to us in everyday life, while Anthony finds his ability to classify his own life is a route to happiness. Their double-sided collaborative poster addresses stereotypical perceptions of seemingly opposing approaches to life.

GraphicDesign& is a new social enterprise celebrating the connectedness of graphic design with all areas of the wider world. It will publish books, papers and other things; host events and use its online presence to explore how graphic design is always inextricably partnered with something else. The typographically eccentric Bliss Bibliographic Classification system is its framework, used to link graphic design with one of the myriad of subjects the system identifies.

Alain de Botton is a writer of essayistic books that have been described as a ‘philosophy of everyday life’. He’s written on love, travel, architecture, work and literature. His books have been bestsellers in 30 countries. Alain is interested in how ideas impact on the way we live – he started The School of Life in London dedicated to a new vision of education and is founder and creative director of Living Architecture which offers the chance to rent houses, by some of the most talented architects at work today, for a holiday.

Anthony Burrill is an illustrator and designer whose persuasive, up-beat work has been commissioned by cultural, social and commercial clients around the world. Anthony works across a range of media, including posters, moving image and three-dimensional work, combining an instinctive handling of colour and composition with a witty approach to words. He has worked on advertising campaigns for clients such as London Underground and The Economist and taken part in many international exhibitions, most recently as part of Graphic Design Worlds at the Triennale di Milano.

Double-sided, drill hole at top, silk-screen printed in black on 350gsm Multi-Kraft recycled board that is brown on one side and white on the reverse
