Alan Aldridge - The Man With Kaleidoscope Eyes
Published to coincide with the exhibition at the Design Museum from October 2008, this illustrated biography charts Aldridge’s life as a graphic entertainer, with paintings and drawings covering his whole career from 1964 right up to the present. Interspersed in some 250 colour illustrations are stories and anecdotes about those who Aldridge encountered along the way, among them Picasso, the Queen and Salvador Dalí.
Alan Aldridge was responsible for a great many album covers that defined the graphic style of the 1960s and 1970s. He was also creative director of Penguin Books, for whom he designed over 100 innovative covers.
Among the names with whom Aldridge worked are Jimi Hendrix, the Rolling Stones, Elton John and Andy Warhol.
Alan Aldridge burst upon the creative world of Sixties’ London just like The Beatles, with whom he worked. A charismatic personality with a fan base as strong as any rock star, Aldridge created exuberant, colourful designs, which conjured up grotesque monsters and gave form to universal fantasies, capturing the dreams and hallucinations of a generation.
An illustrated autobiography of the man who produced The Beatles Illustrated Lyrics: a visual feast for those who lived through the Sixties (and therefore need reminding) and for those who wished they had.
‘The graphic equivalent of Frank Zappa. And maybe a mind as twisted and creative!’ – Nick Mason, Pink Floyd.
