Kivi glass votive
- Glass votive, designed by Heikki Orvola for Iittala.
These small, colourful jewels of light are the creations of Iittala’s thorough knowledge of glass. The colours and thickness of the glass enriches the glow as it multiplies the flickers of the flame. The wide range of colours to choose from lets you create a personal combination for every season and occasion of the year.
The Iittala Kivi Votive candle holders are made of pressed colour-glass. The melted glass that is used to manufacture Kivi is initially transparent and “metal dioxides” are added to give them colour which is both resistant to fading after exposure to the sun and to scratches. The metal oxides that are used to create the “warm” colours, like cadmium-selenium for red, are more expensive than the metals used to create the “clear” colours and this is reflected in the price of the votive.
Unlike the "clear coloured" votives which are manufactured in large numbers on a automatic press the Red Kivi Votives are hand pressed by just three workers in the factory of Nuutajärvi. Every glass mass has to be melted separately in the furnace before it is taken out of the oven by a factory worker with a pipe to be then introduced in the hand press. Afterwards a red Kivi Votive has to be heated once again for a chemical reaction to occur that changes the colour from yellow to an intense ruby-red. This manufacturing process is costly and needs manual work which makes the whole manufacturing process longer.
