These small, colourful jewels of light are the creations of Iittala’s thorough knowledge of glass. The colours and thickness of the glass enriches the glow as it multiplies the flickers of the flame. The wide range of colours to choose from lets you create a personal combination for every season and occasion of the year.
The Iittala Kivi Votive candle holders are made of pressed colour-glass. The melted glass that is used to manufacture Kivi is initially transparent and “metal dioxides” are added to give them colour which is both resistant to fading after exposure to the sun and to scratches. The metal oxides that are used to create the “warm" colours, like cerium, titanium and selenium for yellow are more expensive materials than the metals used to create the “clear” colours and this is reflected in the price of the votives.
Unlike the "clear coloured" votives which are manufactured in large numbers on a automatic press the "warm coloured" votives are manufactured on a smaller scale with a helping robot hand in the Iittala factory. As each colour has its own recipe a smaller furnace and smaller press have to be used than when creating the “clear” glass votives, which reduces the production capacity and makes the Kivi manufacturing more expensive.
