This book charts contemporary illustration's rich history: from the rampant idealism of the 1960s to the bleak realism of the 1970s, and from the over-blown consumerism of the 1980s to the digital explosion of the 1990s, followed by the increasing diversification of illustration in the early twenty-first century. The book explores the contexts in which the discipline has operated and looks historically, sociologically, politically, and culturally at the key factors at play across each decade, while artworks by key illustrators bring the decade to life. Contemporary illustration's impact and influence on design and popular culture are investigated through introductory essays and profiles of leading practitioners, illustrated with examples of their finest work. The latest edition of this collaboration between two classic names in design: Paul Smith and Anglepoise.  Paul Smith's design for the third edition exhibits a bold primary colour palette, inspired by the visual vocabulary of Dutch painter Mondrian’s De Stijl. Originally created for Anglepoise by leading British industrial product designer, Sir Kenneth Grange, the timeless Type 75 design provides the perfect canvas for a designer known for his mastery of colour. Its streamlined, modernist form has become the designer’s palette and its no-frills, mechanical functionality is highlighted by his playful colour-by-component approach.

The sharply bent veneer consists of multiple delicate layers laminated with cheesecloth to make the shell extra strong and give the chair the springy flexibility that is essential in a backrest. The technique was pioneered by the first cantilevered chairs of the Bauhaus school, but here, the university’s practical need for stackability has been incorporated into the design, which makes it possible to stack as many as eight chairs together. The stackability also comes in handy in a private home, making it easy to store spare chairs for extra dinner guests DIMENSIONSW 49 x D 50 x H 46/80 cmMATERIALSBase: Solid wood with moulded plywood seat with plastic or felt gliders
