Inspired by a gift from his son, Arno Stolz developed the idea of a miniature gallery of typographic works. In 1980, he began writing letters to well-known designers from around the world, asking for a creative contribution to help fill the compartments of typesetting boxes. The result is a mosaic of about 300 unique pieces presented in these relics from the days of hot type This is enriched and supplemented by the extensive correspondence that Arno Stolz conducted with the designers over almost three decades. Both the artworks and the remarkable collection of letters and New Year's cards are presented for the first time in this publication An introductory section provides the necessary background to fully grasp the significance of the "Gallery in the Type Case"

A New Program for Graphic Design is the first communication-design textbook expressly of and for the 21st century. Three courses Typography, Gestalt and Interface, provide the foundation of this book. Through a series of in-depth historical case studies (from Benjamin Franklin to the Macintosh computer) and assignments that progressively build in complexity, A New Program for Graphic Design serves as a practical guide both for designers and for undergraduate students coming from a range of other disciplines Synthesising the pragmatic with the experimental, and drawing on the work of Max Bill, Beatrice Warde, Muriel Cooper and Stewart Brand (among many others), it builds upon mid to late 20th century pedagogical models to convey contemporary design principles in an understandable form for students of all levels, treating graphic design as a liberal art that informs the dissemination of knowledge across all disciplines For those seeking to understand and shape our increasingly networked world of information, this guide to visual literacy is an indispensable tool. About the author: David Reinfurt (born 1971), a graphic designer, writer and educator, reestablished the Typography Studio at Princeton University and introduced the study of graphic design. Previously, he held positions at Columbia University Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation, Rhode Island School of Design and Yale University School of Art. As a co-founder of O-R-G inc. (2000), Dexter Sinister (2006) and the Serving Library (2012), Reinfurt has been involved in several studios that have reimagined graphic design, publishing and archiving in the 21st century. He was the lead designer for the New York City MTA Metrocard vending machine interface, still in use today. His work is included in the collections of the Walker Art Centre, Whitney Museum of American Art, Cooper Hewitt National Design Museum and the Museum of Modern Art. He is the co-author of Muriel Cooper (MIT Press, 2017), a book about the pioneering designer

A celebratory look back at one hundred years of passenger flight, featuring full-colour reproductions of route maps and posters from the world's most iconic airlines From the first faltering flights over plains, water, and mountains to the vast networks of today, air travel has transformed the world and how people see it. Maps played their part in showing what was possible and who was offering new opportunities. As tiny operations with barely serviceable airplanes pushed out farther and farther, growing and merging to form massive global empires, so the scope of their maps became bigger and bolder, until the entire world was shrunk down to a single sheet of paper. Designs featured sumptuous Art Deco style, intricate artistry, bold modernism, 60s psychedelia, clever photography, and even underground map-style diagrams For the first time, Mark Ovenden and Maxwell Roberts chart the development of the airline map, and in doing so tell the story of a century of cartography, civil aviation, graphic design and marketing. Airline Maps is a visual feast that reminds the reader that mapping the journey is an essential part of arriving at the destination

The Straus Center for Conservation and Technical Studies at the Harvard Art Museums encompasses over 2,500 of the world's rarest pigments. Museum director Edward Forbes started the collection at the turn of the 20th century, in order to preserve the early Italian paintings he had begun to collect. Over the years, the collection grew into a huge apothecary of bottles and beakers, as other art lovers and colour experts donated their own pigments. Today the collection continues to grow, and regularly helps experts across the world to research and authenticate paintings Visually excavating the museums' extraordinary collection, An Atlas of Rare & Familiar Colour examines the contained pigments and artefacts--their provenance, composition, symbology and application. It also explores the larger related fields of chromatics, the historical narratives of art and chemistry, and the innovations with which we have sought to better illustrate our aesthetic and expressive compulsions The book includes a foreword by renowned British colour author Victoria Finlay
