As we settle into the spring, we approach the conclusion of our Skateboard exhibition on May 19th. This month's post highlights four compelling books to commemorate the show.

Our curated selection explores different facets of skateboarding: as a hobby, art, subculture and discipline. Whether you’re an aspiring beginner or an industry veteran, glide through the illustrated fable of Karl Watson, submerge yourself in the surreal world of Jim Phillips, rummage through the archival pantheon of Palace and take a more comprehensive look at the history of skateboarding with Jonathan Olivares. This playful 2007 retrospective exhibits Phillips' illustrious art and sports careers from 1965 until 2005. It includes a variety of visual media, including typography, drawing and photography. Created by professional skater Watson in 2022, this endearing picture book seeks to inspire youngsters to ride, learn about themselves and make friends. In 2009 Lev Tanju founded his online streetwear brand Palace during the social media boom and quickly amassed a cult following. Through the consolidation of countless product images and playful, at times absurdist prose that seemingly has nothing to do with its subject, this publication documents the decade-long progression of the label.
