This month we're giving some air to Skateboarding

As we settle into the spring, we approach the conclusion of our Skateboard exhibition on May 19th. This month's post highlights four compelling books to commemorate the show.

Our curated selection explores different facets of skateboarding: as a hobby, art, subculture and discipline. Whether you’re an aspiring beginner or an industry veteran, glide through the illustrated fable of Karl Watson, submerge yourself in the surreal world of Jim Phillips, rummage through the archival pantheon of Palace and take a more comprehensive look at the history of skateboarding with Jonathan Olivares. As usual, there is a bundle discount offer available. Read on below.

Skateboard art book

1. The Skateboard Art of Jim Phillips

This playful 2007 retrospective exhibits Phillips' illustrious art and sports careers from 1965 until 2005. It includes a variety of visual media, including typography, drawing and photography. If you have an art aficionado you fancy treating, this paperback will make the perfect gift. Lovenskate will also host a screen-printing workshop with us on May 11th, that will be sure to get the creative juices flowing.

2. My First Skateboard by Karl Watson

Created by professional skater Watson in 2022, this endearing picture book seeks to inspire youngsters to ride, learn about themselves and make friends. If you know a whippersnapper who fancies getting started, then a perfect pairing for this title would be our Blastskates "Build Your Own Skateboard", perhaps you could also enroll them in our deck design event on May 29th and 30th to set them on their way.

"No matter your age, race or gender, if you had a skateboard, you were like family.”

3. Palace Product Descriptions: The Selected Archive

In 2009 Lev Tanju founded his online streetwear brand Palace during the social media boom and quickly amassed a cult following. Through the consolidation of countless product images and playful, at times absurdist prose that seemingly has nothing to do with its subject, this publication documents the decade-long progression of the label. If you are a fashionista, we also offer a limited edition pair of Converse perfect for 180 kick-flips.

Skateboard book

4. Skateboard by Jonathan Olivares

Olivares recently produced this hardbound title to accompany our namesake show. In 240 pages, he showcases 100 deck designs from the late twentieth century to the present day, comprehensively tracking trend developments of their parts, components, styles and accessories. If you would like to see our other display-related products, you can shop for them here. On May 11th, Andrew Mashigo will host an exclusive show tour.
