Now reprinted in hardback Marking the centenary of the Russian Revolution, Imagine Moscow: Architecture, Propaganda, Revolution explores Moscow as it was envisioned by a bold generation of architects in the 1920s and early 1930s. Featuring rarely seen material, this book – and the exhibition of the same title – portrays an idealistic vision of the Soviet capital that was never realised. Focusing on six unbuilt architectural landmarks, the book explores how these schemes reflected changes in everyday life and society following the revolution. Large-scale architectural plans, models and drawings are placed alongside propaganda posters, textiles and porcelain, contextualising the transformation of a city reborn as the new capital of the USSR and the international centre of socialism. The book also includes essays by Richard Anderson, Jean-Louis Cohen and Deyan Sudjic, which address a range of important themes in early Soviet architecture that remain relevant today. This book accompanied the Imagine Moscow: Architecture, Propaganda, Revolution exhibition held at the Design Museum 15 March 2017 – 4 June 2017

A new expanded edition of this must-have book for all graphic designers When designer Peter Dixon joined the Sainsbury's Design Studio in 1962, he ignited a remarkable revolution in packaging. The British supermarket was developing its distinctive range of "own label" products, and Dixon's designs for the line catapulted Sainsbury's to the graphic forefront: simple, stripped down, creative, and completely different from what had gone before The striking modernity of the new Sainsbury's look pushed the boundaries of high-street graphic design, reflecting a period full of postwar optimism. It also helped build Sainsbury's into a brand giant, the first real British "super" market of the time Produced in collaboration with the Sainsbury family and the Sainsbury Archive in London, Own Label examines and celebrates this paradigm shift that redefined packaging design An essential book for graphic designers and those interested in cultural nostalgia from the 1960s and 1970s, Own Label offers a unique historical insight into how the foods we ate were packaged for our consumption

Exclusive to the Design Museum, a 2-colour gradient poster - from green to blue - of the Technics SL-1210MK2 direct drive turntable system 40 x 50cm Printed on GF SMITH Naturalis - Absolute White Matt paper Limited signed print of 120 This poster has been created using the split fountain screen printing technique, where two inks are simultaneously pushed through the screen to create a natural colour blend. The results are truly unique each time, giving each poster an individual finish. The Technics SL-1200 turntable series was produced between 1972-2010 as a high-fidelity consumer record player but quickly became a favourite among radio stations and DJs because of its direct drive high torque motor design, which made it suitable for push button cueing. The introduction of slip-mats saw the rise of (beat)mixing and scratching amongst DJs, also known as turntablism. The build quality and control over wow and flutter meant the equipment was particularly suitable for use in nightclubs and has become a staple With more than 3 million units sold, the SL-1200MK2 and its successors, is widely regarded as one of the most durable and reliable turntables ever produced with many of the models manufactured in the 1970s still in heavy use Frame not included

Everything is about the relationship between you and me Exclusive to the Design Museum Signed in pencil by artist Anthony Burrill Graphic artist Anthony Burrill combines a knack for simplicity that packs a punch with analogue craft skills and powerful, positive messages. Burrill frequently collaborates with other forward-thinking creatives across disciplines spanning music, architecture, curation, education and fashion; pushing his traditional discipline of choice, letterpress printing, into bold new territories Whether working on an art school pavilion, an acid house record, a book or a poster design, Burrill’s work is instantly recognisable. While his pieces all bear the marks of his letterpress process and all its joyful idiosyncrasies, Burrill’s direct and multidisciplinary approach is one that’s constantly evolving, combining tradition with bold new approaches and technologies Words, gentle humour, no-nonsense communication and people are at the heart of Burrill’s practice and his distinctive brand of upbeat messaging: its core DNA is one created through a longstanding passion for creativity, the power of simplicity and an innate curiosity about the world and people in it

An A4 black and white print titled The Battle of LA On February 24th, 1942 a strange object was spotted in the night sky over Los Angeles. Air raid sirens were sounded across the county and a total blackout imposed over the city. Fearing an imminent attack from Japanese forces, the US Navy opened fire. When daylight eventually broke and the smoke cleared, the “enemy” was nowhere to be seen. The incident - named “The Battle of Los Angeles” - was declared to have been a false alarm, and written off as a case of “war nerves.” A later report suggested the culprit was likely a stray metrological balloon Inevitably, such dissatisfying explanations fuel speculation, and this time of an extra-terrestrial cover-up. UFOlogists cite the photograph from which this print is made, taken on the night, published in the Los Angeles Times, as evidence of a visitation, claiming that it shows spotlights directed at an alien spacecraft.  American DJ, record producer and composer Jeff Mills is one of the many who remain unconvinced by the official version of events, and worked with sound artist Yuri Suzuki to produce a drum machine named The Visitor, inspired by this photograph and the Battle of Los Angeles Printed on 150gsm Munken Kristall acid free paper

We live in a world that is now predominantly urban. So how do we define the city as it evolves in the twenty-first century? Drawing examples from across the globe, Deyan Sudjic decodes the underlying forces that shape our cities, such as resources and land, to the ideas that shape conscious elements of design, whether of buildings or of space Erudite and entertaining, he considers the differences between capital cities and the rest to understand why it is that we often feel more comfortable in our identities as Londoners, Muscovites, or Mumbaikars than in our national identities Written by Deyan Sudjic, Director of the Design Museum
