Book Club: September 2024
As we transition into autumn we introduce a new segment to our monthly Book Club: Design Discipline in Focus.
Here, we will select a visual arts specialism and suggest books that provide you with the essentials for learning, training, and practising in this medium.
September’s centrepiece is interior design. These texts implore you to step into technicolour - and to recognise that there is no place like a vibrant, expressive home. Eszter Steierhoffer and Justin McGuirk take you on a whistle-stop tour of twentieth-century home aesthetics, Phaidon presents a definitive selection of epoch-defining designs, Pantone paints a picture of the principles of colour theory and Matthew Williamson draws attention to the nuances of personal style. As always, you will find a bundle deal here with 10% off, free delivery and a gift on us. Read on below.
1. Home Futures: Living in Yesterday's Tomorrow
In 2018 - we held our Home Futures: Living in Yesterday's Tomorrow show. This exhibition chronicled the evolution of domestic spaces over the previous century - through the theme of retrofuturism. This catalogue serves as a document of the show and is segmented thematically into six theoretical essays exploring different approaches to livelihood. Discussions of living: with others - on the move - smart - with less - with autonomy and in utopia will encourage you to point a critical lens at yourself and your abode. This title would work fittingly with our best-selling Infinity Pad - which will let you jot down your ideas and make cursory sketches. If you feel apprehensive about your drawing capabilities, attend our illustration course with Peter Ayres and Trevor Flynn on November 9th and 10th.
2. 1000 Design Classics by Phaidon
Mid-century, Memphis, minimalism and more - the chronology of modern design movements is vast, and it can be tricky to establish where our tastes lie. This trusty Phaidon tome extends a helping hand - it is a 600-page encyclopaedia of key residential objects spanning the last 400 years. Their selected works are ordered chronologically and itemised into 20 colour-coordinated categories - with each featuring a section of academic text and a caption image. It begins in 1663 with Zhang Xiaoquan's Household Scissors and concludes in 2019 with Tani Adeoye's Bata Stool. If you want to put a statement work atop your mantelpiece, look no further than our Enzo Mari Resin Vase and, on October 6th, we are holding an interior workshop with Kirstie Pringle and Francesco Savini - we encourage you to book tickets.
“When the starry sky, a vista of open seas, or a stained-glass window shedding purple beams fascinate me, there is a cluster of meaning, of colours, of words, of caresses, there are light touches, scents, sighs, cadences that arise, shroud me, carry me away, and sweep me beyond the things I see, hear, or think."
- Julia Kristeva
3. Pantone: 35 Inspirational Colour Palettes
Colour theory connoisseurs - Pantone issued this swatch deck a decade ago, yet their observations remain oh-so-relevant. This index sprawls over thirty pages, each featuring a palette of four colours - conceptually grouped and contextualised with immersive, poetic passages. Pantone's plethora of colours may provoke you to wonder: "Am I more of a Satin Madder, a Parfait Pink or a Carmine Rose?". Would you like to play around with hues, tones, and shades? - check out our Colour Game - you will learn how to distinguish your primaries, secondaries, and tertiaries - and become a certified chromatologist.
4. Living Bright: Fashioning Colourful Interiors by Matthew Williamson
At the turn of the millennium - Matthew Williamson launched his fashion brand. A decade later, our museum held a major show dedicated to him - lauding his masterful, whimsical womenswear. During this time, he ventured into furnishing. Last year, Williamson redeveloped our Design Kitchen and published this book. He divulges his effervescent approach to homeware - sharing reference images, inspirational spaces and noteworthy projects - punctuated with sections exploring experiences, memories and anecdotes. Plan a fun family outing with us - visit our Grazie Enzo display, grab a bite at our restaurant and visit our immersive Barbie shop. Do you find the design of fashion dolls and their playhouses enthralling? - Reserve a space on our display talk with Sam Jacobs and Tiya Dahyabhai on November 9th.
