At more than 120 bpm, electronic music sets the tempo on dancefloors around the globe. Accompanying the exhibition Electronic: From Kraftwerk to The Chemical Brothers, this book offers an insight into the visual culture of electronic music, and how technology, design, art and fashion have contributed to its power. With its roots in Detroit and Chicago in the early 1980s, electronic dance music was popularised across Europe through underground rave parties. Its impact on contemporary culture is still unfolding today. Containing interviews with early pioneers such as techno legend Jeff Mills, The Designers Republic’s Ian Anderson, and those pushing the political dimension of electronic music, such as ballroom dancer and DJ Kiddy Smile, Electronic bears witness to the shifting nature of the genre Illustrated with over 300 images, some published here for the first time, Electronic features Jean-Michel Jarre’s virtual studio; work by pioneer Daphne Oram of the BBC Radiophonic Workshop; audiovisual performances by musicians like Bicep and the Chemical Brothers; fashion collections by Raf Simons and Charles Jeffrey of Loverboy; iconic photography by Jacob Khrist and Tina Paul; artwork by Christian Marclay; club graphics from Peter Saville and Mark Farrow; and iconic venues such as the Haçienda, Gatecrasher, Fabric, Berghain and the Warehouse Project. Reflecting the shifts in society over the past thirty years, electronic music has generated distinct visual languages as well as its own political and cultural ideals Edited by Jean-Yves Leloup, Gemma Curtin and Maria McLintock Designed by Agnès Dahan Studio and Design Museum Publishing

MEMORY CODE is a project with the central focus on the human memory. Originally developed as an audio/video live performance the duo SCHNITT based their research for this work on the decoding of their personal memory During the composition of the album, Schnitt undergoes an inspection and analysis of their own conserved informations, automatisms and intense emotional states connecting them with their current state of mind The album Memory Code is developed in nine tracks, each one dedicated to a certain type of memory in which successions of layers gradually become visible and emerge in the soundstructure generating a balance between subtle personal sensations and vibrations. Crumbled fragments of memory - undefined and blurred combine and overlap, a disorderly flow of events subordinated to rigid mathematical structures are finding a location in the sound space interposed between past echoes and future moments For the realisation of the album MEMORY CODE, SCHNITT extends their work inviting several international artists to participate with their personal sound memory to the project, asking them to send one or more “ memory sound files” in order to integrate and open the project to other artistic influences, different cultural backgrounds, national origins and generations The "memory file" contributions received by the eleven guest artists Caterina Barbieri, Ignacio Aguilera Bericochea, Tilman Ehrhorn, Anders Ilar, Incite/, Vitor Joaquim, Herman Kolgen, Ran Slavin, TacitGroup, Frans de Waard and Pavel Zhagun are integrated as a micro ignition of memory into the sound structures previously developed by SCHNITT, as well as being an initial input for new compositions in behalf of the Memory Code album FEATURING : CATERINA BARBIERI, I.A. Exclusive to the Design Museum, a 2-colour gradient poster - from yellow to pink - of the Roland TB-303 Bass Line synthesizer 40 x 50cm Limited signed print of 120 Printed on  GF SMITH Naturalis - Absolute White Matt paper This poster has been created using the split fountain screen printing technique, where two inks are simultaneously pushed through the screen to create a natural colour blend. The results are truly unique each time, giving each poster an individual finish. The TB-303 (Transistor Bass) released in 1982 was originally marketed at guitarists as a bass accompaniment but was overlooked until the mid 80s when DJs and electronic producers in Chicago discovered its unique capabilities Producers started to experiment with the filter's cutoff frequency, resonance and envelope modulation which resulted in truly unique sound, one which was the birth of an entire sub-genre; acid house In 1988 acid house arrived on the UK shores from the US, at the same time as the emergence of a new drug, ecstasy. Between 1988-89 the UK’s youth population was gripped by the movement, dubbed the Second Summer of Love. Music, art & fashion were all transformed forever… and it was even symbolised by its own logo, the smiley With only 10,000 units originally produced, the TB-303 is one of the most sought out vintage synths ever and the Guardian listed its release as one of the 50 key events in the history of dance music

Exclusive to the Design Museum, a 2-colour gradient poster - from green to blue - of the Technics SL-1210MK2 direct drive turntable system 40 x 50cm Printed on GF SMITH Naturalis - Absolute White Matt paper Limited signed print of 120 This poster has been created using the split fountain screen printing technique, where two inks are simultaneously pushed through the screen to create a natural colour blend. The results are truly unique each time, giving each poster an individual finish. The Technics SL-1200 turntable series was produced between 1972-2010 as a high-fidelity consumer record player but quickly became a favourite among radio stations and DJs because of its direct drive high torque motor design, which made it suitable for push button cueing. The introduction of slip-mats saw the rise of (beat)mixing and scratching amongst DJs, also known as turntablism. The build quality and control over wow and flutter meant the equipment was particularly suitable for use in nightclubs and has become a staple With more than 3 million units sold, the SL-1200MK2 and its successors, is widely regarded as one of the most durable and reliable turntables ever produced with many of the models manufactured in the 1970s still in heavy use Frame not included

Developed in a unique electric blue colourway exclusively for the Design Museum Electronic Exhibition A history of electronic music mapped out to the circuit board of a theremin, one of the world's first electronic musical instruments Celebrates over 200 inventors, innovators, artists, composers and musicians who (in our opinion) have been pivotal to the evolution of electronic music, from the invention of the earliest known sound recording device in 1857 to the present day The print loosely groups genres, from the obscure Musique Concrète (Pierre Schaeffer) to the better known Krautrock (Kraftwerk, Can, Tangerine Dream, Neu! and Faust), Synthpop (Gary Numan, Human League and Depeche Mode) and Electronica (New Order, Massive Attack, LCD Sound System, The Chemical Brothers and Daft Punk) Detroit techno legends (Juan Atkins, Kevin Saunderson, Jeff Mills) Godfather of House Music (Frankie Knuckles) and discover early pioneers (Daphne Oram and the seminal BBC Radiophonic Workshop) as well as inventors of iconic instruments (Robert Moog, Léon Theremin, Thaddeus Cahill) Key pioneers featured include Léon Theremin, Bob Moog, Karlheinz Stockhausen, BBC Radiophonic Workshop, John Cage, Brian Eno, BJÖRK, Aphex Twin and our favourite innovating record labels Mute and Warp 50 x 70cm Metallic silver screen print 120gsm Keaykolour Royal Blue uncoated paper Designed by Dorothy

The inspiration for the Program Your 808 series of posters came from a fascination with Swiss design, Information Graphics and the Roland TR-808 Drum Machine. Before drum machines had internal memory, musicians had to resort to pattern charts if they wanted to remember their patterns and reprogram them later on Program Your 808 puts a modernist twist on the classic pattern chart, and is a visual way of documenting and displaying some the classic 808 drum patterns 40 x 50cm
