London is one of the world's oldest great cities. It grew from three centres: the Roman settlement in the 1st century on the northern banks of the Thames, now known as "the City"; Southwark on the southern banks; and Westminster upstream. London expanded rapidly. The Great Fire of 1666 led to the proposal of many radical rebuilding schemes but these came to little. Instead London was rebuilt piecemeal driven by capitalism and housing demands London's population passed one million by 1800 and had reached 6.5 million a century later. Its structure is immensely complicated and there is little discernible form. Unsurprisingly it is not characterised by any particular architectural style with its buildings having been amassed over such a long period of time This 3D map of London, at a scale of 1:5000, is of "the City" - London's hub of trade, commerce, and banking The model can be hung vertically or displayed on a desk or table top Each sculpture is handmade in Sussex, England

Adjaye Africa Architecture: A Photographic Survey of Metropolitan Architecture Adjaye Africa Architecture: A Photographic Survey of Metropolitan Architecture

Adjaye Africa Architecture: A Photographic Survey of Metropolitan Architecture

£65.00

Quantity
The African continent contains some of the world's most vibrant culture and creativity, and yet its buildings - vernacular, colonial or contemporary - have rarely engaged the interest of Western architects. David Adjaye, the first black architect to establish a truly global reputation in his field, has found endless sources of inspiration for his designs in the rich - and chequered - heritage of Africa's teeming metropolises. His life dream was to return to the continent as an architect to document Africa's built environment. Over a long decade, he tirelessly documented these dynamic, colourful cities, photographing thousands of buildings, sites and places, and letting each building speak for itself in telling contrast to a design world obsessed with photorealistic slickness The result was a stunning seven-volume work that has become an essential resource for all those interested in the burgeoning continent. This compact edition will make the fruits of this once-in-a-generation record available to a much wider audience. The result is one of the most original, ambitious and important architectural publications of our time, now available to everyone wishing to gain an understanding of a unique architectural heritage overlooked for too long

Why do architects wear black?

Why do architects wear black?

£18.00

Quantity
"An industry manager who left his white-blue, silver-shimmering world of car bodywork and dove into the pitch-black, mysterious world of architecture for the first time during a competition asked me one day: "Ms Rau, why do architects actually wear black?" Although I was wearing black and I am an architect I didn’t have a spontaneous answer, so I responded: "Ask the other architects!" That was in 2001, and it is why this small book came to be. I have asked the question at an international level and whenever it seems appropriate ever since. The sometimes amusing and other times programmatic or hair-splitting answers I have received over the last seven years are listed chronologically in this little black volume. Read, and please, don’t ask me why architects wear black!" - Cordula Rau

Planning Architecture: Dimensions and Typologies

Planning Architecture: Dimensions and Typologies

£63.50

Quantity
In formulating a design concept into a viable plan, architects oscillate constantly between two planes of observation: the actual design task in the context of planning typologies such as residential buildings, office buildings, museum, or airport; and the individual room, meaning the kitchen, office, classroom, sanitary rooms, storage rooms, and so on Planning Architecture offers architects and students a thought-out planning tool, in which two main sections reciprocally complement one another: the "spaces" and the "typologies" between which the planner can flexibly oscillate depending on his or her plane of observation. All relevant planning information is presented in a detailed clear fashion, and in context An introductory chapter explains the basis and framework for typological design, and a "reference section" clearly lists general dimensions and units, regulations and standards

Africa Rising: Fashion, Design and Lifestyle from Africa Africa Rising: Fashion, Design and Lifestyle from Africa

Africa Rising: Fashion, Design and Lifestyle from Africa

£40.00

Quantity
The African artistic spirit extends far beyond the canvas and studio; a new wave of African creatives is on the rise and making a name for itself in design, fashion, photography, and architecture across Africa and abroad. While the colours, patterns, and crafts are profoundly rooted in African tradition, young designers infuse their creations with a delightfully discordant edge making them contemporary, unique, and truly pieces of African design Africa Rising calls stereotypes and archaic clichés into question. A comprehensive portrait of Africa manifests from marrying Peter Mabeo’s furniture made from indigenous wood or Nobukho Nqaba’s body of photographic work that handles the themes of migration and foreignness through the clever use of every day objects or the publicly-minded architecture of David Adjaye with the up-and-coming threads of Selly Raby Kane’s energetic fashion line or the soundscapes of Spoek Mathambo’s Fantasma that fix Bantu lyrics to computerised beats Insightful essays from experts and artisans contextualise each portrait and provide insight into talented pioneers, outstanding projects, and the way craft can be a catalyst for social and economic developments. The volume is co-edited by Design Indaba: a multifaceted design platform that garners worldwide critical acclaim for their annual design conference held in Cape Town. Africa Rising celebrates the way art strengthens and unifies cultures and, most importantly, invokes the multi-faceted richness of Africa. Explore Africa’s worldwide ripple effect of inspiration, creativity, and artistic community

Authoring: Re-Placing Art and Architecture

£28.00

Quantity
Authoring: Re-placing Art and Architecture challenges traditional assumptions about the relationship between art and architecture From 2008 through 2010, David Adjaye, along with Marc McQuade, taught three studios at the Princeton School of Architecture. Each studio focused on a collaboration with three distinguished artists - Matthew Ritchie, Teresita Fernandez, and Jorge Pardo - on interventions in three vastly different sites: the state of New Jersey, the Gowanus Canal in Brooklyn, and the city of Merida in Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula. Through an exploratory process of questioning, developing, and testing, each architect and artist re-examines the expectations traditionally associated with the conventions of architectural design and representation The volume presents recent projects from David Adjaye, Matthew Ritchie, Teresita Fernandez, and Jorge Pardo, along with interviews, essays, and archival material that unpack the shared space of art and architecture
