This original archive print is from the Design Museum's first ever exhibition in its initial iteration as the Boilerhouse Project which ran from 1981 to 1986.
Art and Industry: A Century of Design in the Products We Use was a revolutionary exhibition at the time in that it made the case for the serious study of industrial design.
It examined the influence of professional designers on the manufacturing industries showing pieces including hairdryers, petrol pumps, telephones and typewriters.
The Boilerhouse Project was the first initiative to be funded by the Conran Foundation, an educational charity set up by Sir Terence Conran with the aim of raising the level of discussion about contemporary design.
The design of this poster by Stafford Cliff hints at both the tension and duality between creativity and industrial design. Each step features the name of a prominent industrial designer that featured in the exhibition including Raymond Loewy and Ettorre Sottsass Jr.
